If you are new to WordPress or don’t know php/html well, having a messed up blog is the most annoying thing that can happen when you are trying to get maximum exposure to your blog or business.

One thing that I know since working with WordPress Blogs for some time now it that it is super easy to mess up your WordPress theme on accident, or even by being proactive with your own blog, as you attempt to learn php code and make changes to your own blog.

Steps To Prevent Messing Up Your WordPress Blog

To avoid messing up your blog on a whim, or due to the periodic accident, make sure to take the following steps:

1) Always Keep a Backup of Your Original Blog Theme Files

When you have a backup of your original theme files, and you don’t have a php master on your beck and call, you can always disable your broken theme, switch to another theme, and then reinstall your original theme. (This will help you get your theme back to its original shape.)

Note: It is also always good to back up all of your files (images, themes, and database) in the event something else goes wrong.  Better to always be safe than sorry.

2) To Keep From Mistakenly Editing Your File, Change Your File Permissions

If editing yourself, change the permissions when you have to edit. It can easily be the case that you edit a core file without realizing it from the “Appearance => Editor” area on the left hand side of your WordPress Dashboard.  Make sure to familiarize with how to change file permissions.

NOTE: If you installed WordPress yourself, you likely do not need to modify file permissions.

3) Connect with other WordPress Bloggers Who are More Code Savvy

Connect with other bloggers who are more technical or code savvy than you are.  If you’re pretty technical, it is always good to bounce ideas off your peer(s).  It helps especially when it is taking you longer than 30 minutes to fix something on your blog.

4) Refer to the WordPress Codex

The WordPress Codex is a wealth of knowledge!  If you ever have any php or code-related questions, there is tons you can learn by simply surfing the WordPress Codex.

Taking these steps will save you from a broken WordPress Blog theme and make you super happy to know that your visitors aren’t coming to a messy virtual house!

Measurements For Timeline Images

No Gravatar

I love the opportunities for creativity within the design constraints of the new Facebook Timeline Cover. Many have been guessing at the measurements for images on the new timeline and has filled my inbox asking for the measurements and tips and trick.

When uploading a picture that doesn’t match the space allotted on timeline, the site adjusts the image to fit, which affects your resolution. Pictures that are too small get stretched, while oversized ones get squished.

Facebook application developer SkandNet released a list of guidelines for images most effective — in pixels, width listed first:

  • Cover photo: 851 by 315;
  • Profile picture: 180 by 180;
  • App image: 111 by 74;
  • Thumbnail: 32 by 32;
  • Images within wall posts: 404 by 404; and
  • Highlighted and milestone images: 843 by 403.

The graphic below illustrates the location of each of these images.

Tools For A Great Facebook Cover

I love working out my design(s) in a Photoshop sandbox because I can avoid uploading lots of Cover images to Facebook that I ultimately end up not liking.

I have provided a Facebook Timeline Cover Template PSD for Photoshop here (right-click and choose Save File As) or the Facebook Timeline Cover Template Transparent.png here. If you find it helpful or fun, please tweet a link to this post!

Here’s a short link you can copy and past into Twitter:

Enable Facebook Timeline For Brand Pages

No Gravatar

Finally, the most popular topic of the last few weeks, Facebook Timeline for brand pages, is live and in action. There are some changes, such as how the applications are displayed.

With the New Timeline for Pages coming into place on Facebook....I have received many request asking how do I activate, customize by page and what are the correct dimensions for the facebook cover, group page header, profile thumbnail, etc....so here goes!

The Facebook Timeline for brand pages is now live and in action as I write this.  You can now enable your timeline today!  On March 30, 2012 Facebook has stated that all Pages will automatically get Facebook Timeline for brand pages.

To enable your timeline for Brand pages follow the steps below:

1. Sign into Facebook

Go to your page link(s) : https://www.facebook.com/pages/status/

2. Turn on preview for your Company/Fanpage

Only page admin(s) can see the timeline in preview mode

3. Add A Cover Panel

You can add a cover photo from the right hand side of your fan page. If you don’t have one, now is the right time to design a nice looking cover page.

Verizon is promoting a cover photo that has been made by one of their fans. That’s really cool!

Walmart’s cover photo is also quite colorful.

4. Publish Your Page

Once your page is “published” your Facebook fan page timeline will be visible for everyone to see.

Now you are done.....be sure to comment below when you are done, like my fanpage and leave a link to your fanpage and  I will return the favor!

We are living in the digital age. There's no reason your frequently-used files have to stay locked away on your church/office computers.

As someone who works with several different computers throughout the day, this is one of the few applications I have installed on each one of them.  Dropbox is a free app that lets you sync all your files online and across all your computers, whether they are running Windows, Mac or Linux. It's seamless and transparent which is what makes it so cool. In this post today I'm going to show you what it can do, and how it has been helping my online/offline business.

To get started with Dropbox, you need to install the client on each computer you want to install it on. If you are new to Dropbox, then the you will create a Dropbox account during the initial install. Otherwise, you can enter your Dropbox account info to sync files to your existing account. Upon completion, the installer will then create a single Dropbox folder on your computer. Any folders and files created in this Dropbox folder will be synced online and across any other computers linked to your account.

With my Dropbox setup, I can now work with my files much more effectively. It's just an efficient way to transfer files I'm working on back and forth between computers. For example, any articles I create can be put in my Dropbox so I can work and use them anywhere.  If you have important files to backup, Dropbox is great for that as well.

Having a Dropbox is also great for outsourcing. Since it's free, I can easily get my outsource workers to download and install it on their own computers. Then I can create separate folders for each of my outsource workers and give them access to the files they need. In addition, Dropbox keeps a revision history of all your files so if you or your workers accidentally delete a file, you can easily recover it.

With Dropbox, file syncing has never been easier. A free Dropbox account gives you 2 gigabytes of storage which is good enough for most people. It is another invaluable tool I use pretty much on a daily basis.  It allows me to work at home (or any where else with internet access). Videos, notes, sermon notes, announcements, marketing notes,etc... can all be saved on your home computer or laptop and within minutes or seconds, the files will also be on your office pc at work. It's simple to use and I can't imagine working without it now. Download it today and start incorporating Dropbox into your workflow. It's so simple and hassle-free....And it's FREE!

Figure out a good solution to help your staff be more productive in and out of the office. You'll be a tech hero!

Want more traffic?

Here's another piece of the internet marketing puzzle!

You're gonna love this...

There are a ton of different ways to get traffic to your blog but today I wanna give you an extra traffic tip.

Today's puzzle piece is called Pinging!

I know that you may have heard of this over and over but what you probably weren't given was a massive ping LIST of over 170 ping sites.   A friend of mind 'Hector' drop this ton of knowledge on me the other day.

Let me explain.
Pinging is basically, when you let certain sites know that you have updated
your blog. This is great news for us (as bloggers) because we're constantly
adding new content to our blogs - every single week.
With today's tip, you're gonna be able to "ping" (or notify) over 170 sites
that your blog has been updated, every time you add content, automatically
without doing ANYTHING, just by setting this up. When I started using
Pinging, I only had 46 ping sites and during my journey I gathered many more.

I want to give them all to you, so you don't have to search forever..

Let me help you set this up.
  1. First login to your wordpress admin dashboard,
  2. then scroll down to "Services"
  3. then click on "Writing"
On this page you'll see a box that says, "Update Services" - what you need
to do is simply Copy and Paste all the sites that I'm gonna give you into
that box and press save changes... & You're DONE!

Here's an image of what I just said:

This will make sure that your blog gets indexed by the search engines a lot
faster and get better rankings a lot quicker, too.
Click here to get your massive ping list. Simply select the entire list and
copy & paste.

If you feel this information is informative, don't hesitate to click the "like" the post below.

...or if you just wanna say thanks - you can leave a comment for that, too :-)

Easily Encrypt Data on Your Thumb Drive

No Gravatar

TrueCrypt is an open-source encryption software that enables you to create a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mount it as a virtual drive, that can be accessed via a drive letter. Any file that is stored on this virtual drive is automatically encrypted on-the-fly, and can only be accessed while the drive is mounted with the correct password or key.

I’ve seen many church accountants and business owners backup their Quick Books files on a thumb drive without ever encrypting their data. This could be bad for a company or a church if that data gets into the wrong hands. So, in order to help you protect your files, below is a video showing you how to use True Crypt. You’ll be up and running within 5 minutes!

True Crypt runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux!

It's Absolutely FREE!

Hey Fellow CMM’s (Connect4Change Marketing Millionaires! :-)

Here’s a little hidden piece of the internet puzzle!

Social sites like Facebook and Twitter has made it easy for you to quickly share news articles, blog posts, etc. around but wouldn’t it be nice if you could also add some of your own commentary to the page before sharing it with the world?

Well, there’s a new and interesting web app called markup.io that can help you here. It instantly turns any web page into a virtual whiteboard where you can add text, draw shapes, arrows or even do some freehand drawings. Here’s a quick demo:

While you are on a site, hit the markup.io button on your browser bookmarks toolbar and it will float a set of drawing tools one that page. You can scribble over the page now and when you hit publish, all your drawings and annotations are saved to a unique URL that you can now pass along in your social circle.

If you make a mistake, you can use the usual keyboard shortcuts -- ctrl+z will undo your previous action while the backspace key will remove the element from the page.

Markup.io is available in the form of a bookmarklet so there’s no need to download or install anything and it’s compatible with all browsers except for IE 6 (which you shouldn’t be using anyway).
